Barack Obama The Jackie Robinson Of Presidents
Barack Obama and Jackie Robinson broke racial barriers with their chosen professions. In both cases it has brought out the good in Our country. Unfortunately the ugly American syndrome surfaced also. This is when good, decent American citizens have to deal with unexceptable behavior from those that choose to show hatred towards people and things they don't understand.

Jackie before baseball

Jackie Roosevelt Robinson was born 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. Let's fast forward to Adulthood. Robinson served two years in the United States Army. Robinson opposed events of racial discrimination while serving in the military. He refused to sit in the back of a military bus. He was taken into custody by the military police. After a discussion with one of the officers about racist questioning, the officer suggested Robinson be court martial. After the court martaled he was dismissed from the US Army with a honorable discharge.

Early Baseball

Robinson played for a short time in the Negro League proir to getting recruited by Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1945. He had to agree that he would not react to racial slurs, or any derrogatory remarks that would be made towards him or his family. This was a challenging time. Some of his own teammates were opposed to being on the same team with a black man. Visiting teams as well as his own team threatened to sit out. Threats were made against him and his family. Racial slurs like N* gg* r echoed from the stands.

Robinson had the support of The League President Fred Trick, Happy Chandler, and of course his community. No supporter of Robinson stood out more than Pee Wee Reese. While Robinson was receiving heavy harassment and heckling from the crowd, Reese walked over and gave Robinson that famous hug of support.
Despite all the hatred and harassment Robinson received, he carried himself with great dignity. He let his talent and stats do his talking and silence most of his critics. The dodgers won the National League Pennant during Robinson's first year. He earned rookie of the year, had 12 home runs, .342 batting average, leader in stolen bases and was MVP of the National League. Robinson eventually stole home 19 times, was the dodgers highest paid player at that time. Robinson and the dodgers beat the New York Yankees in 1955 for the World Series Championship. He paved the way for Sathel Paige, Willie Mayes, Hank AAron and others.

Meet Barack Obama

For those who say they don't know enough about our president.
Barack Obama our 44th president of the United States of America was born August 4th 1961 in Honolulu Hawaii. His father(Barack Obama Sr.) was of Kenyan descent and mother(Stanley Ann Duham) from Wichita Kansas. Barack Sr. was out of Obama's life after he was two years old. After the separation from his mother Obama only saw his Kenyan father once more before his sudden death in a car crash. He live in Indonesia for brief period with his mother. Obama was raised mostly by his white grandparents--Stanley and Madelyn Dunham. Stanley Dunham enlisted in service after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour and pushed through Europe in Pattons Army. Madelyn Duham worked on a Bomber Assembly line. Stanley later worked in sales and Madelyn became a banker.

A great American story made ugly

Just like Jackie Robinson, Barack Obama's arrival on a platform that was previously all white has brought out some of the ugly in America with words like  " hang darky from a tree," Barack the Magic Negro."   Some went as far as to make this comment about obama's daughter(M) she was referred to as "typical street whore" "Ghetto thug" "Ghetto street trash" and "when would she get her first abortion." No matter how much anyone dislike her father, this was an horrible attack on an eleven year old girl.

There's an attack from those that wish to make our president to appear foreign. They want his presidency to appear illegitimate. Then there's this group that's always asking to see the presidents birth certificate. Why show it? They'd say it's a fake. It looks as if no one wants to talk about his white mother and grandparents that raised him. Some mean people have decided it's better demonize that black side of him. Link Obama to the Kenyan man he barely knew.
Where else but the USA can a little boy abandoned by his father, be raised mostly by his grandparents that served our country, lose his mother to ovarian cancer, go to the best colleges and excel, chose to do community work instead of corporate law, become a senator, and later the president of the United States of America only to be made to appear as the villain of all villains. Shame on them all. Just like the late Jackie Robinson our president has carried himself with dignity.

Obama with Grandparents that raised him

What do they really mean?

I never heard the term "I want my country back" until Barack Obama was elected president. The United States of America still stands on the same solid ground. It hasn't moved anywhere. Maybe these people would like to go back in time instead. The fifties might be a good start. People did come to realize it was wrong to treat Robinson in such a demeaning manor. As time goes on people will read and talk about the disrespect our president received from a few ignorant people. Some may even feel ashamed. Then there's the ones that will go to their graves fools.

I know our president isn't perfect. There's been a few moments that I've yelled and screamed at some of his decisions. At the end of the day Obama's still our president. He's biracial with a black wife and two daughters residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. In my younger days when a person of color embarked on any position or field that was considered white only , there was a great sense of pride. Everyone wanted that individual to do a great job. These individuals were proud and knew the community was watching. If they done a good job, they paved the way for another. Just like Jackie Robinson opened the door for minorities in Major League Baseball, Barack Obama is now paving the way for what many minorities thought was out of their reach. The great Jackie Robinson could not have a Terrell Owens attitude. Although he was an activist, Robinson had to prove he belonged.
Sometimes our society goes to far and use race as a tool that divides our country. People that commit these acts often call themselves God fearing Christians. This isn't Christan behavior and it isn't good for America. People like Mike Huckabee only talking about Obama's Kenyan father that he barely knew trying to force out that ugly American side just for a few votes should be ashamed of them selves. They are no better than the people that called Jackie Robinson a N*gg*r. This isn't playing the race card. It's simply presenting the facts.

The assault on his birth and race have been 1950s stupid. I am very glad that Obama became president. Not because he will be good. He has the GOP as an enemy and there is no defense against money. Nope. Not in America today. I did not vote for Obama. I did not vote for the evil axis of Bush, Bush McCain, etc.

If Obama was legit, there is no way that the money, that has this planet by the throat and gooseberries, will let Obama or the American people succeed. This right wing GOP is pro business to the point of being slavers and America is fooled by their noise every election. Now that I've carved on the evil empire, I'll give the democrats their due: Every elected Democrat becomes a republican after they are elected. I'm glad they Obama is playing American President. I'm glad Jackie Robinson played baseball. God bless!

A great hub with interesting information on Jackie Robinson.

Regardless of truth or fiction if Obama was not "vetted" properly for office, it was due to some fat rich white guy not doing his job. I am glad the skin color has been broken. I have not heard or read any of the racial slurs you mention, but I do know that some where it is taking place by some one. I take that back "Pastor Manning" a man in Brooklyn has a multitude of videos on his web and you tube.

Sad. Peace, 50

Thanks 50. I don't care if people feel he's doing a bad job, or just don't like Obanma we need to get past the silliness. The ugly American syndrome does none of us any good.

Dear Mimi,

I love this article! President Obama is a good, decent man. He loves his family and he loves his country. He must definitely love this country, to take all of the abuse he receives and still want to be its leader. I, like you, have not agreed with all of his decisions, but I have respect for his intelligence. He is in a position to know things that I do not.

"Take my country back" is perhaps the most hateful, racist comment I have ever heard. I am not black. I am white, and because of that, I am probably less sensitive to racially motivated comments than most black people. So, when I have absolutely no doubt that a comment is racially motivated, it is definitely a hateful and racist comment, and those who deny it are kidding themselves.

It is also shameful! How dare the people that say this ugly thing think that they are taking their country back! From whom? From those of us who proudly cast our legal votes for this honorable man? Obama is my President! I am proud that he is! The only ones that are stealing this country are the the corporations. Actually, they are paying the GOP to steal it and hand it over...

I enjoyed your article very much, especially the excellent section on the awesome talent Jackie Ronbinson.

Your commenter above says '"Take my country back" is perhaps the most hateful, racist comment I have ever heard.'

That is the stupidest sentence I have ever read and I've read a million of them. "Take my country back" has absolutely nothing to do with race and to say it does is imbecilical. The same people who say "Take my country back" love Colin Powell, Condi Rice, Justice Thomas, Thomas Sowell, Alan Keyes, Herman Cain, Michael Steele . . . I could go on all day. That alone poo-poos the race argument.

"Take my country back" refers to a huge goverment bent on socialism and income redistribution and unionism that are all anti-American and the total opposite of what made America great. If Karl Marx was president you would hear cries of "Take my country back" and it wouldn't be because of anti-semitism. It would be because many of us see the results of Marxist ideas played out in the world and we don't want them here.

Thanks Jillian. This hate suppresses the growth of our entire country and keeps us blind to the real issues.

Hi James. Happy you liked the article. I think some people feel that negative way when they say they want their country back. All the names you mentioned in your comment are pretty cool except Justice Thomas.

i campaigned for obama and have already donated toward his re-election. i want him to get the chance to see most of the Affordable Care Act's provisions come to pass. he will be able to stave off dishonest and fear-mongerers' attacks on this practical, compassionate legislation.

Free health care for all Americans could bring such a feeling of freedom. Many times people may want to change jobs or venture into their own business don't because they fear losing their health care. It's a shame we can all work hard all our lives and save only to have some illness wipe it all away. If President Obama takes a stance and put up a real fight, he will earn a second term. I know things haven't been easy for him.
